Grand Final Round Up
After what has been an incredibly successful season for Boomerangs F.S there were 4 teams still competiting on the weekend for the crown of Super League Champions in their respective age categories.
The day started with our 14 Boys taking on a previously unbeaten side in the West City Crusaders. The Crusaders had come out on top in the teams 2 previous encounters 4-2 and 5-2 but the team was determined to change the run of results. After a relaxed warm up the boys took the court with a fierce intensity and the deadlock was broken early with some brilliant link up play followed by a cool finish under the advancing keeper. 3 minutes later it was 2-0 to the Boomerangs boys with an excellent finish across the keeper. West City hit back their long throw game which lead to what can only be described as a dubious goal. But Boomerangs didn't frustrate and score shortly after to leave the half time score at 3-1. The boomerang onslaught didnt cease after the interval and with 2 more goals unanswered in the 2nd half it ended up being a convincing win that was well deserved.
Next up the 14 Girls who after a week off could have been forgiven for making a slow start. But no such luck for oppostition Hills Brumbies as our girls came out of the gate at 100 miles an hour and were rewarded with numerous opportunities early on. Our girls got the goal they were searching for amongst the plethera of missed early chances. The 2nd goal came off the back of the rock solid defense our girls set, after stealing the ball a quick counter attack followed by a precision finish saw our girls up 2-0 at the break. More of the same followed in the 2nd half our girls having all of the possession and the Brumbies attacking is spurts without much convicition. A third goal late on in the 2nd half looked to have seasled it but the Brumbies had other ideas hitting straight back to remain in the contest. Despite their efforts The Brumbies couldnt convert and left our Boomerangs girls to claim the Silverware this season.
Our 16 Boys were coming off the break as well and were up against it as they took on West City Crusaders. The boys started slowly with the Crusaders doing all the running, and after 8 minutes the Crusaders got their just rewards with a well worked goal. Things looked up for the Boomerangs when a Crusaders player was sent off for a 2nd cautionable offence. However the boys failed to capitalise on the numerical advantage and found themselves down 2-0 after an intercept lead to the Crusaders 2nd. Another just before the break saw the Crusaders well on top. After the interval the Boomerangs came out with some more enthusiasm as they were looking to show why they finished the regular season in 1st position. 2 early goals and our boys were back in it. As the half went on chance after chance went begging for both sides and with only a 30 seconds left it looked like the Crusaders had the game in the bag. However the Boomerangs had other ideas with a brilliant free kick levelling the scores. Crusaders went searching for a winner and with only 2 seconds on the clock a long throw from the Boomerangs keeper drew a push and penalty kick for the Boomerangs. The kick was calmy slotted through the Goalkeepers legs for an epic 4-3 victory which the boys will remember for a long time to come.
Last but not least was our youth boys who, missing the services of key player Steven Klug through suspension, went into the match as underdogs against a South Coast side yet to lose a game this season. The game could not have started better for our boys with a geat release from the Boomerangs keeper straight onto the head of the advancing Tim Denne who neatly headed for the games opener. The boys settled quickly into their counter attacking style of play and were quickly rewarded for the stout defense with 2 more counter attacking goals. Th boys had several other chances in the first half but it was the Taipans side that was next on the score sheet when some poor marking at the back post allowed the easiest of finishes. With the scores locked at 3-1 the 2nd half began how the first finished Boomerangs Happy to sit deep and hit on the counter attack while the Taipans were keeping the ball and looking to break down the solid Boomerangs Defense. Although the Taipans managed, on many occassions, to find small openings through the defense of the Boomerangs finding a way past the outstanding Ashley Collins in the Boomerangs goal was something the Taipans seemed destined not to achieve. When a Quick release from Ashley Collins saw Ryan Keir wonderfully turn his defender and finish across the body of the advancing goalkeper the Boomerangs looked comfortable. With only 1 minute remaining the Boomerangs called a timeout, it worked against them though with their defensive rhthym being broken and the Taipans taking full advantage to score 2 in 25 seconds. However that was how it ended leaving the Boomerangs with a 4-3 win.
4 Chamipions from 4 Grand Finals we couldnt have asked for more in only our 2nd season. With the NSW Premier League to look forward next season it seems the Boomerangs will continue to grow.
